Fresh Take - Deadpool & Wolverine (Spoiler Free Thoughts)

 Available in Theaters

Synopsis (from IMDB):

A listless Wade Wilson toils away in civilian life with his days as the morally flexible mercenary, Deadpool, behind him. But when his homeworld faces an existential threat, Wade must reluctantly suit-up again with an even more reluctant Wolverine.

Thoughts

This is Deadpool's third outing and first officially in the MCU and it is a memorable first impression. Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman do a very good job in this movie as a matter of fact I think the entire cast does a great job here. The jokes in here, in my opinion, work very well and are completely on brand. Does he go at Fox? Yes. Does he call out Marvel Studios? Oh yes. Does Warner Bros catch a stray? You had to know it was coming. The stakes in this movie are pretty high in that Deadpool is trying to keep his Earth and timeline from being wiped from existence. Deadpool admittedly is not a hero, but the anchor being of his Earth was killed, that being is none other than Wolverine. Being the forward thinker that he is Wade goes and grabs another Wolverine from another Earth and timeline thinking that will be enough (clearly its not); and that is basically the two worst people have a team up to try and save existance. Its important to note that to the none comic reader that Jackman's Wolverine is the Wolverine that killed the X-Men. In the original Logan comic, Wolverine, not Xavier is the one who kills the X-Men. Some people may not know that and they don't spell it out here. Personally, I think this movie is better than Deadpool 2 in a couple ways. One I think they did a good job of setting up moments where you get Wade being human. The other I think the cameos made sense and the variants of the different Wolverines, including comic accurate Wolverine were appropriate and hilarious. The action is great here and the fights are bloody and brutal. There were a lot of little nods in their characters that I think the regular movie going public isn't going to understand but the comic fans will get and I am glad those are there.  Also, they must have spent a nice portion of the budget on the soundtrack because there is a lot of licensed music in here, especially the opening credits.

One of the few issues I had with the movie was with the villain Cassandra Nova. I think actress who portrayed her did a great job it was more on the writing side of things. She doesn't have a motivation outside of I'm evil and then she gets one it was kind of weird. There are also a couple of scenes where there had to be something left on the cutting room floor as they don't make sense.

For Parents

This movie is Rated R for violence, language and gore. It runs at a little over two hours and is paced very well. This is clearly not for little kids. It is a comedy and there are a lot of crude humor as well as comedic gore. No sex montage this time, but a lot of dismemberment.

Final Thoughts

This movie is a solid MATINEE. I think its better than the second film and a great way to introduce him in the MCU proper. I think Hugh Jackman will always be Wolverine and it was great to have him back for at least one more time. The cameos were awesome and a fitting tribute to some characters that, in all honesty, it was just nice seeing them on screen again.  It will be interesting to see what they do with Deadpool going forward. Fresh Take - Beverly Hills Cop Axel F (Spoiler Free Thoughts)

 Available on NetFlix

Synopsis (from IMDB):

Axel Foley returns to Beverly Hills after his daughter's life is threatened, and works with old pals John Taggert and Billy Rosewood to uncover a conspiracy.

Thoughts

Did not realize that it has been 40 years since the original Beverly Hills Cop. This movie, by some, may feel like its a nostalgia trip but for me I thought they did a great job with it. The movie starts out just like your standard Beverly Hills Cop movie, Axel causes trouble in Detroit while also stopping a crime. Then at the same time something happens in Beverly Hills causing him to have to go their and do what he does best. This movie plays the hits and Eddie does not disappoint in that area. The cast is great in this movie and the people that they could bring back are all here with a few very good cameos. John Ashton is back as Taggert, now the police chief in the Beverly Hills PD, Rosewood is back played by Judge Reinhold. The chemistry between those three is still magic. The newcomers Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Taylour Paige are good as well, though there is one trope that I don't like that I will get to in a minute. The action is choreographed well and the comedy is very well done with jokes that don't drag on. Kevin Bacon is actually good in his role here in my opinion. Another thing that is done very well in my opinion is the soundtrack. They even brought back that 80s saxophone solo. The soundtrack has remixes of some of the original themes and I thought that it was done very well.

Here's what I didn't like. First I thought they outed the villain relatively quickly. I think they did that just to get it over with so they can spend the rest of the story on how they were going to bust him but it was very early in the movie which I thought would have been better served if there was a twist. Second, I hate this trope in Hollywood movies now with the Father is the cause of all the problems in the childs life. Its getting old and tired to me. Surely, they can find some other way than the 850 ways we've already seen this done before. It would have been nice to have a little more story Bobby and Jane, I feel like there are a scene or two that was missing as it pertains to there story. Also, there was not enough Billy Rosewood in this, just saying.

For Parents

This movie is rated R. The F bomb is dropped a lot, mostly by Taggert but it is dropped a lot. There are a few action scenes and shoot outs but nothing to gory. The jokes are adult in nature so I'm pretty sure you don't want the little ones watching this but to me its fine for teens and up. The movie is a little under two hours and is paced well. No post credit scene so there's that.

Final Thoughts

This movie is perfect for NetFlix. If I had to give it a rating I would give it a FULL PRICE. I enjoyed it a lot. The story made sense and it just felt like a good buddy cop movie. There were a lot of call outs primarily to the first movie and I think that it was done well considering this is the 40th anniversary. What did you think of Beverly Hills Cop Axel F? Leave a comment and let's talk about it.
