Impressions - The First Descendant Thoughts

Available on XSX | S, PS5|4, Steam

Thoughts on the Story & Gameplay

The First Descendant is basically a looter shooter style game in the vein of WarFrame and Destiny. The story revolves around characters called Descendants and their war against the Vulgus while also trying to solve the mystery surrounding the Void and the massive Colossi beings that attack every so often. From a gameplay standpoint each of the descendants are unique and their playstyles reflect that. The game is presented from a 3rd person viewpoint, which is a breath of fresh air. Personally, I play with Lepic, Blair and Bunny. I find those characters fit the style of play that I like. So far each of the different gameplay areas are unique and have differing terrain. The enemy types are varied as well. Each time you clear an area, a corresponding fight with a Colossi occurs. These interactions are fun especially if you have a good team with you. This game does have cross play enabled and it works very well. I am playing on my Series X and have been playing with people on PC and PS5 and have not had any issues. As far as the weapons are concerned there are a lot to choose from and a lot of modules to make them stronger. The unique weapons are fun to even they sometimes take a while to make. My current favorite is the Thunder Cage, I love that gun, it comes in handy in a pinch. There is also a lot of lore on each of the descendants which is pretty cool if you ever want to know more about them.

Thoughts on the Good

From a visual standpoint the game looks great. Each of the descendants are unique and their character models are well designed. There are a lot of weapons, modules, and accessories to obtain and choose from to make your descendant fit your particular playstyle. I also like that this game gives you the time limits for how long a particular mission can take. It helps with time management as sometimes I only have a limited amount of time to play and that helps to figure out what all I can get cleared. Personally, I found the gameplay to be fast and fluid and outside of one time I haven't had any crashes or issues during my gameplay sessions. The music is pretty good as well as the voice acting.

Thoughts on the Bad

This is an issue I find with all games in this genre and that is the redundancy. There is going to be a lot of replaying certain areas and Colossi just to get that one item you are missing to create that one thing. Its just something that annoys me. If you don't like the way WarFrame handles modules then you may not like the way First Descendant does it. I haven't had many issues with crashes outside of the first week the game released. For the most part my experience has been smooth.

For Parents

This game is a free to play game. That being said they do have a battle pass but they do have a way to obtain the characters via in game play. The game is rated T for Teen and the action is directed towards aliens and monsters. It is sci-fi influenced and that is a plus for me. Content is coming and there is a lot of stuff to do, add in the cross play aspect and I think the game is a good pick up.

Overall Thoughts/Is the Game FUN?

I am enjoying this game. Usually when a game like this releases I am severly late to the party where it feels like its hard to catch up. I have been playing since release and I am having a lot of fun. If you are interested in trying it out it is free to play so you can at least see if its something you would want to put some time into. Check out the video below.
