Synopsis (from IMDB): Returning to the action and spectacle that have captured moviegoers around the world, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take audiences on a '90s globetrotting adventure with the Autobots and introduce a whole new faction of Transformers - the Maximals - to join them as allies in the existing battle for earth.
Four and a half years ago I enjoyed Bumblebee. I thought the story was tighter and made sense. The human characters weren't annoying and the overall feel of the film was just better. I was excited when I heard that this film was being made and even though it was a different director I was still hyped to see this one when it released. I was not disappointed. This is not like the Michael Bay films; in my opinion, that is good. The big bad for this film is Unicron, envision, Galactus but an actual robot. What I liked was that they kept him the size he is supposed to be they didn't alter him much from what was shown in the 1986 movie. One of the best things about this movie is that the focus stayed on the Autobots. Yes, humans are in the movie but the movie is called Transformers. This is probably the best they have ever written Optimus Prime in the live-action films. He comes across as a leader frustrated by not being able to get his people home and will do anything to make sure that happens. The Beast Wars side of things was also handled with respect, however, some of my favorite Maximals seem to not have made the cut. Which had me feeling a little down, not gonna lie. I have always liked the Gen 1 version of the design of the Transformers and once again this works, just like it did in Bumblebee. From a visual perspective, the movie looked great. In the action scenes, you can tell what is going on and for me, that's a big plus. Since this movie takes place in the 90s and in Brooklyn there is era-appropriate music throughout. While some may find Mirage annoying, I didn't I thought it was in line with how the live-action movies have been portrayed since 2007.
The only thing I had an issue with, was once again, the human element to the story. It was just really cliched. I really wish there was a way to do humans in stories like these where it isn't predictable but I guess that isn't going to happen anytime soon. I will say that at least in this movie both of the main humans brought something to the table outside of dumb luck. Also, the actors themselves were pretty good in my opinion, I just didn't like the story they came up with for them.
For Parents
The movie is rated PG-13 and has a 2-hour and 7-minute runtime. There is a mid-credits stinger that is continuing to set up something that was started in Bumblebee. For the most part, this is like most blockbusters of this type. Outside of robots getting destroyed, there isn't any real gore just a lot of action. There are, however, a couple of jumpscare scenes that might be a little much but I'm pretty sure there are only two of those scenes in the movie.
Overall Thoughts
This movie is a solid MATINEE. Perfect for an afternoon visit to the movies. The movie doesn't drag along and there is a lot of screen time with the Autobots, Maximals, and Predacons. Personally, I think the movie is very enjoyable, and keeping up the story they started in Bumblebee is the right choice as the movie now feels like a series as opposed to just standalone films.
