Fresh Take - Halo Ep 3 Emergence (Spoiler-Free Thoughts)

 Available on Paramount +

Thoughts

Have you ever seen an episode of a show and just thought to yourself, 'is it just me or do writers really hate kids?' This episode starts off showing the backstory of Maake aka The Blessed One and how she came to have that book she's been reading in the first two episodes. This episode continues to show the background politics and manipulations going on with the UNSC. As the story is clearly setting up a who will find the Halo ring first style situation. Chief being back with the UNSC is interesting in and of itself as it is clear he knows something is up he just doesn't know what. We finally get to meet Cortana and personally I think she will be a breath of fresh air for the series. So glad they have the voice actress from the game voicing her and the fact that she can come and go at will, will be interesting moving forward. The issue with Madrigal is another plot point that will be getting some attention. I don't really know how I feel about that at this point as I feel the stuff on Madrigal is going to be kind of like a filler story. Personally, I think Madrigal served its purpose but apparently, the writers do not. I am liking that we are getting to know more about Master Chief, they are trying to humanize him which can work if done in an interesting way. I just hope they don't have him dropping 80's action movie one-liners, as they do something with his character in the episode that can open up the door to ridiculousness if not handled carefully. The effects in this episode seem to be getting better and I for one am happy about that. I am wondering though if we will ever see the grunts or brutes at some point. As of now, they have only shown the Elites and I am guessing we won't be getting the Arbiter in this series which to me would be a real shame. Dr. Halsey continues to be a character that I can't figure out. It's clear she's up to something but I can't for the life me figure out if she's going full Tywin Lannister or not. I guess only time will tell on that particular plot point. I am liking the flashbacks that they are showing as it is very clear that the UNSC has covered up a lot of situations and is living up to why people don't trust them. I still think that Reach is going to get glassed by the end of the season I'm just wondering how this will all play out.

Overall

I enjoyed the episode. They are doing enough to keep me interested and while I was initially worried about Cortana I was actually liking her in the episode. The cliffhanger and the growing sense of it being a race between The Demon (Master Chief) and The Blessed One (Maake) to find the Halo is very intriguing. What did you think of this week's episode?
