Fresh Take - Moon Knight Thoughts on the First Two Episodes (Spoiler-Free)

 Available on Disney+

My Thoughts

The latest entry in the MCU is here and it's with a character that a lot of people may not know. One of the things that I enjoy about the MCU is their ability to take a genre of film or TV and adapt the character and elements from the comic into it in a way that makes it work. Even for characters that people may not be that familiar with as is the case with Moon Knight. This particular show revolves around a mercenary with dissociative identity disorder named Marc Specter who is in service to the Egyptian God of the Moon, Khonshu. In the comics Marc has nine different identities, I genuinely doubt we'll see all of them and the first two episodes focus on the Marc and Steven identities. There is a lot to like in these first episodes one of my favorite things is the psychological thriller aspect of the show. They do some fascinating horror-style elements in the show. From the use of lights and shadow to their use of mirrors. There aren't any real jump scares but they do enough with the music and the visuals that you actually worry about the characters a little bit. Once again Marvel does a great job on the casting. Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke are great on-screen with Ethan playing a cult leader-esque type villain and Isaac flipping between a genuine aloof, awkward, neurotic, and nice guy to badass merc. Their scenes together are great in these first two episodes, I am really looking forward to the rest of the season. There are some comedic moments but they don't drag on and they make sense narrative-wise. To be honest, there wasn't one thing I didn't like in these first two episodes. Disney and Marvel Studios have done a great job on their series so far and I don't see that stopping with this one.

For Parents

Like most of the Disney + MCU shows the episode length is between 45 - 55 minutes. While this show does have lite horror elements, it's not scary and I think if your little ones have seen the other shows they can watch this one. The pacing is fine I never felt the time and they do a good job of setting up the next episode.

Final Thoughts

I really think that fans of the Midnight Sons will be happy with this show as I can see how they will transition into that story. I also like how they are dealing with the supernatural while also being respectful of the genre that which the story is taking place. I have thoroughly enjoyed these first two episodes. Leave a comment and let me know what you think about the series.
