Fresh Take - Spy X Family Code White (Spoiler-Free Thoughts)

 In Theaters

Synopsis (from IMDB):

After receiving an order to be replaced in Operation Strix, Loid decides to help Anya win a cooking competition at Eden Academy by making the principal's favorite meal in order to prevent his replacement. The Forgers decide to travel to the meal's origin region, where they set off a chain of actions which could potentially put the world's peace at risk.

Thoughts

If you are a fan of the anime then you have a pretty good idea of what to expect here. The story is an original one but if I had to guess where it fit in the storyline I would say somewhere between seasons 1 and 2. The movie does a decent enough job for those who haven't seen the anime of explaining who the main characters are in the first 10 minutes. With both Loid and Yor completing their assignments while the narrator explains who they both are and the circumstances around their current situation. As far as the story for the movie is concerned, it is fairly straightforward. The comedy comes in the form of Anya and Bond (their dog) and Yor's misunderstandings of certain situations. Fans of the series will get the jokes, I also think people will understand most of the more "family-oriented" jokes and situations as they are what can happen sometimes in relationships. This is a spy action style anime in the vein of those spy thrillers of the 60s and here I feel the animation team did a great job. One of the sequences that standout to me was the dogfight sequence toward the end. Just a great job all around. The music is in the style of the show with kind of an upbeat jazz sound to it, which I enjoy. Also, all of the characters that have been shown in the 2 seasons in the series so far make an appearance in some way, shape, or form. I do like that as a fan of the show.

I do have one gripe with the movie and that is it kind of slows down in the middle. While the family hijinks were okay you can tell that the movie slowed down here. Also, the main villain of the film I would have liked to get to know a little more about him. He's kind of just the bad guy and that's it, I thought that was a missed opportunity of sorts. Especially, at the end of the movie I think the ending action could have been more epic if there was something more to that character.

For Parents

This movie is a little under two hours. It's rated PG-13 and outside of the issue in the middle of the film it is mostly paced well. The jokes aren't bad and the one joke involving Anya and the bathroom was animated so well, our whole theater was laughing. This is one of those films that is rated PG-13 but I think everybody can watch it as it doesn't get vulgar and no one really dies in the film.

Final Thoughts

Overall I would give this movie a MATINEE. It was a fun film that I think fans of the series will enjoy and even those who haven't watched both seasons of the anime will like as well.
