Fresh Take/Quick Take - X-Men 97 Ep 7 Bright Eyes Spoiler Free Thoughts

 Available on Disney Plus

Quick Take

This episode directly deals with the aftermath of episode 5 and the fallout of what happened on Genosha. There were a lot of surprises in this episode especially on the villain side of things but first things first. This episode really centered around grief. Rogue for the most part went rogue in her quest for revenge. To be honest I loved how this episode felt realistic. Some people when pushed to far or feeling the loss of a loved one are not going to respond with singing we are the world. Rogue wanted people to pay and that's what she was delivering. Small spoiler but this episode introduced Operation Zero Tolerance, one of my favorite X stories from the 90s and Bastion. It will be interesting to see how this season wraps up as Cable returns and warns of an even bigger threat that is coming which I can only assume is Apocalypse. That is a lot of story beads but this show has done a great job of handling these threads while keeping everything balanced. I don't know how I feel about the voice for Bastion yet hopefully we get to see more of him next week. I do like his introduction, the final three episodes are going to be on fire. Have you seen this week's episode? Leave a comment and let's talk about it. As always thanks for the support and please feel free to share if you like the content.

Fresh Take - Spy X Family Code White (Spoiler-Free Thoughts)

 In Theaters

Synopsis (from IMDB):

After receiving an order to be replaced in Operation Strix, Loid decides to help Anya win a cooking competition at Eden Academy by making the principal's favorite meal in order to prevent his replacement. The Forgers decide to travel to the meal's origin region, where they set off a chain of actions which could potentially put the world's peace at risk.

Thoughts

If you are a fan of the anime then you have a pretty good idea of what to expect here. The story is an original one but if I had to guess where it fit in the storyline I would say somewhere between seasons 1 and 2. The movie does a decent enough job for those who haven't seen the anime of explaining who the main characters are in the first 10 minutes. With both Loid and Yor completing their assignments while the narrator explains who they both are and the circumstances around their current situation. As far as the story for the movie is concerned, it is fairly straightforward. The comedy comes in the form of Anya and Bond (their dog) and Yor's misunderstandings of certain situations. Fans of the series will get the jokes, I also think people will understand most of the more "family-oriented" jokes and situations as they are what can happen sometimes in relationships. This is a spy action style anime in the vein of those spy thrillers of the 60s and here I feel the animation team did a great job. One of the sequences that standout to me was the dogfight sequence toward the end. Just a great job all around. The music is in the style of the show with kind of an upbeat jazz sound to it, which I enjoy. Also, all of the characters that have been shown in the 2 seasons in the series so far make an appearance in some way, shape, or form. I do like that as a fan of the show.

I do have one gripe with the movie and that is it kind of slows down in the middle. While the family hijinks were okay you can tell that the movie slowed down here. Also, the main villain of the film I would have liked to get to know a little more about him. He's kind of just the bad guy and that's it, I thought that was a missed opportunity of sorts. Especially, at the end of the movie I think the ending action could have been more epic if there was something more to that character.

For Parents

This movie is a little under two hours. It's rated PG-13 and outside of the issue in the middle of the film it is mostly paced well. The jokes aren't bad and the one joke involving Anya and the bathroom was animated so well, our whole theater was laughing. This is one of those films that is rated PG-13 but I think everybody can watch it as it doesn't get vulgar and no one really dies in the film.

Final Thoughts

Overall I would give this movie a MATINEE. It was a fun film that I think fans of the series will enjoy and even those who haven't watched both seasons of the anime will like as well. Fresh Take/Quick Take - X-men 97 Ep 6 LifeDeath Pt 2 Thoughts

 Available on Disney Plus

Thoughts

This week we jump back to LifeDeath and Storm's battle with the Adversary. We also get to see what Xavier has been up to since his exodus and how he is settling in with the Shi'Ar Empire. Once again the writing in this show is probably the best thing about it as Deathbird has given our galaxy a new nickname, "Milky Way Ghetto". I laughed from a good healthy place. Storm took center stage this week and it worked on every level. This episode had great pacing even though a lot was happening. I also, loved how at the end of the episode they tied it back to the ending of last week's events. As it seemed everything was happening at the same time.

If there is one thing I didn't like about the episode it was that they aren't doing a good job representing the passage of time. With Storm's story she had to have been with Forge for a little while at least a few months at the minimum. However, it feels like that was rushed a little. Other than that I thought the episode was great, with another great cliffhanger. They are really making the wait for the following week's episode hard. So what did you think about the episode. Leave a comment and let's talk about it. Spoiler filled review on Sunday's on YouTube and Twitch or catch the audio version on Spotify, Anchor, and Amazon Music.

Impressions - Princess Peach Showtime! Thoughts

 Available on Nintendo Switch

Thoughts on the Story & Gameplay

To be completely honest I bought this game not expecting much, I just thought it looked interesting. I was not expecting what Nintendo delivered. This story begins simple enough with the Toads bringing Peach a flyer for the opening of a Theatre House. On opening day the Peach arrives but so do the Sour Bunch Gang who take over the theater and all of its plays. Princess Peach along with Stella team up to take back the theatre house and save all of the plays, piece a cake. The game changes the gameplay by using the plays and what they are centered around whether it be action, rhythm based, platforming, or sleuthing. There is a lot of variety, personally, I was more of a fan of the action stages i.e. Swordmaster, Ninja, and Kung-Fu; than anything else. From a gameplay perspective the variety and change up is a huge plus. It kind of reminds a little of Viewtiful Joe, in that the levels all have a different theme and distinct feel.

Thoughts on the Good

There is a lot to like here one being the variety in the gameplay. To be fair the game is a little on the easy side, this may be a turn off to people but the game's challenge comes in finding and collecting the Sparkle Gems. Which depending on the level, you may finding yourself making return trips just because a few may have been missed. From a visual standpoint, the game looks great and has the same kind of whimsical style that one would expect from a Mario style game. The transformation cutscenes are pretty cool and even some of the plays have very cool moments. For example, the Ninja plays have pretty cool moments involving different types of Ninja Scrolls.  Kinda makes me want a Ninja Peach and Zelda Shiek game from Team Ninja, I think it would work. The music is also pretty good and fits each level well. The art design for the different levels are very well done too. Overall just a very good job from top to bottom.

Thoughts on the Bad

There's not much I didn't like but I will say this, the game can feel to easy. Not every game needs to be Dark Souls or Contra but I can see how some people may be turned off by the difficulty. Other than that I can't really think of anything that wouldn't be considered nitpicking.

For Parents

This game is kind of what you would expect from Nintendo regarding one of its Mascot characters. This is a family game, there isn't anything scary or worrying in it. Mostly just a good time, nothing to frustrating. The game does require some thinking with a few of the puzzles and timing in regards to some of the Sparkle Gems but nothing that will make the experience miserable.

Overall Thoughts/Is the Game FUN?

What do I think of the game overall? Well I think its a lot of FUN. The variety in gameplay mixed with the music and overall design is top notch. I did not expect this game to be this much fun. I am really glad I picked it up. Check out some gameplay below from the channel. Have you played Princess Peach Showtime? What do you think? Leave a comment and let's talk about it.

Fresh Take/Quick Take - X-Men 97 Episode 5 Thoughts

 Available on Disney Plus

Thoughts

The title of this episode is Remember It, and I think most people who have seen this one most certainly will. This episode managed to adapt one of the most jacked up moments in X-Men cannon and make it work for the story that they presented. The story in question is E for Extinction. The range of emotions for this episode will vary. Rogue, Gambit, & Magneto travel to Genosha for a political meeting meanwhile at the Mansion the X-Men are doing a sit down with Trish Tilby a reporter. There is a lot of drama in this 30 minute episode. I have to say I like how the writers are portraying the characters and letting them get their moments to shine. The standout moments to me are the Jean/Scott/Maddie situation and the last 10 minutes when it all goes downhill. I won't spoil anything but if you're not invested in the show now I don't see how you can't be. They have been upping the ante in each episode and this one is no different. There are also a lot of questions that come to mind at the end of the episode. We're gonna have to wait and see next week's episode to see what the response will be.

I enjoyed this episode a lot and think it is one of the best so far. There wasn't one thing that I did not like about this episode. It was great from start to finish. Nothing seemed to drag and I loved the cameoes from characters we may get to see more of one day. Have you seen the episode? What did you think? Please leave a comment and let's talk about it.

Fresh Take/Quick Take - X-Men 97 Ep 4 Thoughts

 Available on Disney Plus

Thoughts

Confession time, Jubilee has been one of my favorite characters since I started reading X-Men in the early 90s. Mojo is one of my favorite Marvel villains as for me he is the Joker if he were an executive producer. So this episode was right up my alley. Also, if you follow this blog and my YouTube and Twitch channels gaming is a hobby of mine. Please let this episode lead into an X-Men side scrolling beat'em up. The episode deals withJubilee's birthday and her and Bobby getting stuck in a Motendo gaming system (I love how Mojo avoids copyright).  This part of the episode worked for me as we got to see more of Jubilee and her powers being on display. A lot of people tend to overlook Jubilee's powerset but she is not someone to be taken lightly and I liked that they showed that here. My only complaint at this point is I'm kinda getting tired of Bobby at this point. Hopefully, his character starts to come around but right now he just comes off as whiny and spoiled brat that doesn't understand his situation.

The second part of this episode starts the adaptation of the Life/Death story with Storm and Forge. This should have been its own episode as they kinda rushed a few things. At least to me it felt like they were going really fast. I know a little about the Life/Death story so I am interested in seeing where this will go. Have you seen this week's episode? What did you think? Leave a comment and let's talk about it. As always thanks for reading. Feel free to share if you enjoyed the Quick Take, also check out the Fresh Take podcast Sunday mornings.

Fresh Take - Godzilla X Kong New Empire

 In Theaters

Synopsis (from IMDB):

The new installment in the Monsterverse puts the mighty Kong and the fearsome Godzilla against a colossal deadly threat hidden within our world that threatens the existence of their species and our very own, as well as diving deep into the mysteries of Skull Island and beyond. Delving straight into the origins of Hollow Earth, this film will explore the ancient Titan battle that brought man and monster together forever.

Thoughts

Talk about a fun time at the theater. Let me preface this review, if you like the focus being on the human element in these kaiju type movies you may not like this movie. If you did not like the previous installments (Godzilla King of the Monsters or Godzilla vs Kong) then you're probably not gonna like this movie. Personally, I enjoyed this as I am a fan of the previous installments as I feel they are perfect popcorn, blockbuster type flicks. From a visual standpoint these movies get better with the CG and the creature design. Even though there is one obvious reference to Final Fantasy's Leviathan and Monster Hunter's Mizutsune, I loved the look and feel of the movie. In this movie Godzilla has fully embraced his 'I am a bully' lifestyle. Yes he is still a good guy but sometimes it is hard to tell. The most 'human' part of the movie comes from the Kong side of things as his loneliness is brought to the forefront. The majority of the movie is with Kong and this isn't a bad thing as we get to see a lot of Hollow Earth way more than in the previous movie. Another thing that is a huge plus for me is that the action is clear and you can see everything. There are a couple of underwater fights that are shot well and you can still see what is going on. The main villain, the Skar King, was a decent villain as he had an edge in this fight that made sense and also the reason for the teamup was well done in my opinion as well.

There were a couple of things that made me scratch my head. One being where is Millie Bobby Brown's character, actually where are the characters that were following Godzilla in the previous film. The only one they brought back was Brian Tyree Henry's, Bernie. I thought that was odd. Also, I thought that there were a couple of spots where the movie felt rushed and didn't explain things very well. Also and this is just something I noticed, but it is obvious that Godzilla and Kong are communicating I would have loved to have some subtitles just because I think they're banter would be hilarious.

For Parents

This movie runs a little under two hours. Its paced very well. I didn't feel the movie drag at all. It is rated PG-13 and there are scenes of cities being destroyed as there are a number of action sequences throughout the movie. While there is nothing super gory there are some rather disgusting scenes. If you have watched either of the previous entries then you should know what to expect.

Final Thoughts

This movie was a lot of fun for me. I love that these films are more action focused and give people good kaiju brawls. In my opinion its perfect for an afternoon movie treat so I give this one a MATINEE. Have you seen Godzilla X Kong New Empire? Let's talk about it in the comments below.
