Fresh Take - Halo Ep 6 Solace (Spoiler Free Thoughts)

 Available on Paramount+

Episode Thoughts

Yeah, in this episode Chief is pissed and you know what I really can't blame him. After the reveals of the last episode, it's looking like the chickens have come home to roost and the first order of business for the UNSC is finding a scapegoat. With Chief, if varying states of anger in this episode I'm glad that the episode showed that he isn't stupid. With Maake now on Reach (as a viewer you know this won't end well) she only wants to speak to Chief. Which from her point of view, makes sense as they are alike in the fact that they are both similar. Their interactions this week were well done. The writers are doing a good job of making Maake feel like she isn't going to screw them all over the first chance she gets, however, as a viewer I'm just waiting for the sudden and inevitable betrayal. The politics within the UNSC were a focal point in this episode and I can see how this will come to a head in the final episodes this season. Halsey once again proves that when it comes to ethics she clearly skipped class that day. I have to give the actress credit she is doing an amazing job I just know that if I ever meet her in real life I would be overly cautious.  There was no Kwan or Madrigal this week which I am thankful for as that story has not been interesting in the slightest to me. This week the episode is short clocking in at 48 minutes in runtime. I like these shorter episodes as I feel like there isn't any fluff in them. They get to the point and it works for me. Cortana continues to be the MVP of the season. I like how she is utilized I'm hoping that within the next couple of episodes Chief starts to trust her more as I do like their banter.

Overall

I have to give the series credit it's getting better. They are still mixing lore together but hey at the very least it is working from a narrative standpoint. I'm looking forward to discussing this one with Vikki on Sunday's podcast. Leave a comment and let me know what you thought about this week's episode.

Fresh Take - Moon Knight Eps 5 Asylum (Spoiler Free Thoughts)

 Available on Disney+

Thoughts

So this is the episode where we get the flashback of what happened in Marc's life. I liked how the writer's used the Asylum as a way to go through the important story moments. It was very interesting to see how Marc came up with the Steven persona, especially with his explanation of it. It kind of hit me in the feels a little bit. There were a lot of moments in this episode where the emotional beats were plentiful and impactful. They're still teasing the third persona but not showing it. Personally, I like this touch as that reveal will probably happen in the season finale and that should be really cool to see. It's hard to do this without spoiling the episode, I would encourage people to watch the episode as I think Marvel did a good job with this one. It can be a little confusing if you don't understand Marc's dissociative identity disorder and how they are using the aforementioned Asylum as a way to help both Steven and Marc in their current predicament. Not gonna lie I did like how this ended and I thought they were going to have a mid-credits scene and they didn't which surprised me. Also, there is no Layla this week so I'm interested in what happened to her as the end of episode 4 was pretty hectic.

Overall Takeaway

I am looking forward to the season finale next week and what that could set up going forward. I also am interested in how this will be wrapped up. What do you think will happen in the season finale? Do you think that we will have a surprise guest in the finale? Leave a comment and let's talk about it. Thanks for reading don't forget to check out Fresh Take on Sunday at 10am to hear myself and Fangirl Review give our spoiler-free takes on the episode.

Let's Talk - Kirby and the Forgotten Land First Impressions

 Available on Nintendo Switch

Impressions

The most adorable pink destroyer aka throat god is back in another adventure. This time the shenanigans take place in a 3D space akin to Super Mario 3DWorld. If you have ever played a Kirby game before then you pretty much know what to expect. The game is not difficult at all the challenge comes in finding and freeing the Waddle Dees in each section. This adds to the game's replay value as you will have to play levels over again because of how certain levels are laid out. From a visual perspective, the game looks great and once again Nintendo manages to make a post-apocalyptic world colorful and non-gloomy. The levels are varied and unique and have certain themes to them that play into the area that Kirby is currently exploring. As far as the gameplay is concerned HAL Laboratories made some improvements to the copy ability in this game. Now you can upgrade abilities when you find a blueprint hidden in the levels. This makes going through each level important as these upgrades can come in handy depending on the level you are in at the time. There are side missions that you can do that will grant you Rainbow stars that will help craft upgrades for your abilities. These levels can be a bit frustrating at times as depending on what you are doing there is a time limit. Don't be surprised if it takes a few times to beat some of these. The boss battles in this game can be fun if not a little weird at times just due to the size of the boss and their patterns of attacks. Once again this game isn't hard so taking down the bosses shouldn't be a problem even if you have an incompatible copy ability. Almost forgot about Mouthful Mode. Mouthful Mode allows Kirby to swallow certain objects to help solve certain puzzles or traverse through a level quickly. Some of them look weird and to be fair I think they were basically used for comedic timing on top of being for puzzles. From vending machines to stairs, to light bulbs, and cars Kirby can use Mouthful Mode in a variety of different situations. The enemy design as well is very well done. I like the art style in this game I feel like that along with the soundtrack is very well done.

For Parents

This game is rated E for Everyone. It's a fun little adventure game that's not too hard and can be great for relaxing gameplay sessions. The art style, music, and gameplay work very well together and the level design is top-notch in my opinion.

Overall

I am enjoying this game. It's a nice addition to the Switch library and has enough content to keep gamers busy. There are two modes but as I stated earlier this game is not hard by any stretch of the imagination. I'm looking forward to finishing this one as I am really enjoying myself. Have you played Kirby and the Forgotten Land? Leave a comment and let's talk about it. Thanks for reading and supporting the blog.

Let's Talk - Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Thoughts

 Releasing 07-29-2022 on Nintendo Switch

So last week Nintendo and Monolith Soft dropped a new Xenoblade Chronicles 3 trailer. There are some significant reveals in the trailer the one that caught everyone's eye was the release date being moved up two whole months. Myself and the rest of the Wingin IT Podcast, while looking forward to were surprised by this in all honesty. Usually, when a game's release date gets moved up it's only by a couple of days, not months. That was something to get excited about but the trailer also showed some new game mechanics. The one that stood out was the Interlink system, which combines two characters into a different form for crazy damage output. Also, the trailer showed that characters can swap weapons. I'm interested in learning more about that particular mechanic. It really seems to me that Monolith Soft took the changes that they made to the combat in Torna The Golden Country and upgraded it to the max. I have stated before on the podcast that I think Torna's combat is better than Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and this looks like it's going to be even better. There is also a special edition, however, it will only be available through the Nintendo store and will be linked to your account. I am happy about this as this should take care of the scalper issue that has been plaguing the gaming space for quite some time now. Take a look at the trailer and let me know what you think.

Fresh Take Halo Ep 5 - Reckoning Spoiler Free

 Available on Paramount+

Thoughts

This episode is the shortest episode thus far and I think that does work to its advantage as this episode feels very to the point. It begins with another flashback but this time involves not only Halsey but the Captain as well. This is probably going to be one of the most appropriately titled episodes of all time. To see Chiefs growing frustration at people lying to his face and him knowing it was great to see. Chief finding out that Kai removed her pellet and him being irked by it and Cortana calling him out on it was good to see also. I really hope the other Spartans in the Silver team get their pellets removed as well at some point. The weakest portion of the episode still is the Kwan plot. I was kind of hoping that the whole mystics situation would happen this week but it didn't and like previous weeks' episodes I just want them to get to the point with her story already as it makes the episodes feel uneven. There is a big blowout battle this week and while I did like the action and the fact we finally got to see the grunts, jackals, and even a brute it did feel like the CG wasn't as good. Also, I think if they are going to have the Spartans take their helmets off so much they need to use CG to fix the look like what Marvel did in Falcon and the Winter Soldier with Falcon's costume in the final episode. They used CG to make the costume form fit to his face. In this series, I think they should do the same thing because every time they take their helmets off the armor just looks bad.

For Parents

This episode is heavy on the violence at the end as there is another Covenant Sweep. The episode is shorter than in previous weeks. There is a little gore and one beatdown but it wasn't too graphic.

Overall

I enjoyed this episode and its pace. The action sequence at the end, despite the bad CG, I thought did a good job of capturing the chaos of an ambush/sweep. I like the fact that both Chief and Kai have their emotions back and how that is causing an issue because they don't know how to deal with it. Cortana is still my favorite character so far and Halsey is still my least favorite. Leave a comment and let me know what you thought of the episode. Also, don't forget to catch the Fresh Take podcast on Sunday at 10 am to hear me and Fangirl Review's spoiler-filled thoughts on the episode.

Fresh Take - Moon Knight Ep 4 - The Tomb (Spoiler Free Thoughts)

 Available on Disney +

Episode Thoughts

This week's episode picks up where the last one left off with Khonshu entombed in stone and Steve/Marc without any powers. If it wasn't clear enough in previous episodes it was made clear in this one that Steven pretty much has the hots for Layla. This episode is Layla centric and I was not mad about that, yes there were a couple of cringey lines at the beginning of the episode. Overall, though, it was nice to learn a little more about her and see that she is a badass in her own right. I hope you are a fan of the Stephen Sommers Mummy movies because this episode evokes a lot of the best parts of those two films. They were able to get the tension just right with the music and the horror/thriller elements to where it felt just right and not overdone. This week was another Steven trying to become the MVP of the episode type week. He really comes in handy since he has a love for Ancient Egyptian lore. Also, a big shout out to the visual effects department as the visuals once again looked great. The team has done a very good job of making this show feel very different from the other shows in the MCU and it works. I do have one issue with this episode and that is the cliches. To me, some of their plot points especially the one as it pertains to Layla and Marc you can see coming from a mile away. I really wish they were able to do something different with their story as it is one that I know I have seen done countless times before, other than that the episode keeps to its standard quality. There is something that is very cool that happens at the end of the episode with their depiction of something important which I will go into on the Fresh Take podcast on Sunday, can't really say here because it is a spoiler and a pretty big one.

For Parents

This episode has some horror elements to it that you might now want the little ones to see. There are also a couple of images that could be deemed as scary, although in full honesty you should see it coming a mile away. Just like the previous episodes the runtime is 53 minutes and to be honest I thought it was shorter.

Overall

Another episode I enjoyed. There were a couple of points where the cliches got on my nerves because they were so obvious but everything else is really well done. The ending is interesting and I am really wondering where they will go with this as we only have two more episodes left. What did you think of the episode? Leave a comment and let's talk about it.

Fresh Take - Halo Ep 4 - Homecoming (Spoiler-Free Thoughts)

 Available on Paramount+

Thoughts

Are they trying to make me hate Dr. Halsey? If so good job, it's working. This episode picks up where the last one left off with Halsey, Chief, and company on their way to the planet where he lived as a child. The whole episode gave the feeling that something was off with Halsey. Ever since removing his emotional suppression chip Chief has been behaving more and more human also his memories are coming back which is not good as to what this could mean to Halsey and the entire UNSC Spartan program. Once again the flashbacks were well done and did a lot to flesh out much of Chief's storyline. Back on Reach Spartan 125 aka Kai removed her chip as well which led to some rather interesting dialog and actions that she took throughout the episode. She and the other Spartans were with Miranda Keyes and their interactions were actually another one of the things with the episode that I liked. It goes without saying that I don't really care for the Miranda character but it's actually good to see another Spartan not act so robotic. I'm hoping the other two on the team take their chips out too at some point.

If there is anything I don't really care for it is the Kwan storyline. I just think it's the weakest element of the show. Unless something big happens there in the next few episodes this is going to feel like an unnecessary filler. In this episode especially, every time they cut to Madrigal I was thinking to myself can we get back to Chief or Kai because that's where the interesting stuff is happening. Although there is an action sequence that happens on Madrigal it came too little too late for me in the episode.

For Parents

There is some nudity in this episode though nothing too revealing or scandalous. There are a couple of action sequences but no gore and there is the aftermath of an alien autopsy. The episode runs at about 55 minutes much like the previous episodes. Once again the episode ends on a cliffhanger that has me wanting to see what happens next.

Final Thoughts

Compared to other weeks I thought this episode was pretty solid and kept in line with how the show has been presented. Although I am starting to think that the episodes are a bit too long and some of the side plots can be cut down a little. No Covenant in this episode but I think that works to the episode's advantage as we know where Maake is headed per the last episode. So what did you think of this week's episode? Leave a comment and let's talk about it. As always thanks for reading and supporting the blog.

Fresh Take - Moon Knight Ep 3 - The Friendly Type Spoiler Free Thoughts

 Available on Disney +

The Episode

This episode picks up right where the previous episode left off. Marc has now taken control of the body and is trying to find Harrow to stop him from finding the Tomb of Amet. The really cool thing about this episode is that this time around we see Marc blacking out much like Steven was in the first episode. Marc confronts Steven about this in the episode to which that persona says it's not him doing that, I guess we're getting a third personality this season. As far as the rest of the episode is concerned, Ethan Hawke is doing a great job with his adaptation of Harrow. Sometimes it gets creepy with him like you know something is off about this guy but you just don't know what. They also address something that I am personally glad that they are talking about regarding the MCU as a whole. That is why the gods do not intervene when things happen. It was going to come up at some point, and I am glad they at least addressed it in their own way. There are a couple of cool action sequences in the episode and I like how they are making Stevens's version of the armor different from Marc's so that it's easier to tell who is in control. The story keeps dropping hints about what happened to Marc when he got in bed with Khonshu so I'm expecting that to come to a head, hopefully, sooner rather than later.

There's nothing that I didn't like about the episode. Once again, like last week I thought the episode flowed well and introduced some new characters and concepts. They also name-dropped Madripoor and had a couple Easter Eggs in there for fans.

For Parents

The episode has a fifty-three-minute runtime like last week. Personally, I thought that the episode flowed really well. I didn't feel the time at all. There are a few action sequences but as in the first episode, the first couple happens in that blackout state. The climactic one was shown and that one wasn't as violent as I thought it was going to be honestly.

Overall

I thought it was another fantastic episode. I am really looking forward to seeing what the fallout will be and if we will actually see the third personality show up. Please leave a comment and let me know what you thought about the episode. Fresh Take - Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Spoiler Free Thoughts

 Available in Theatres

Thoughts

The movie picks where the first left off where we see Dr. Robotnik trapped on the mushroom planet essentially going insane. Jim Carrey is great in this in my opinion, yes he is over the top with it but it works well and has some great laugh-out-loud funny moments. This movie introduces Tails and Knuckles with Knuckles being an antagonist for a good majority of the film. Idris Elba does a great job voicing him and playing a Drax from Guardians of the Galaxy style character for all intents and purposes. It could have been annoying but for this film, it works. I felt that none of the jokes were dragged out just like in the first film they did a great job of not beating something into the ground. The CG is exactly like it is in the first film and they did a great job with the designs of Tails, Knuckles, and Sonic and how their different abilities look from a visual perspective. I didn't mind the human characters here they all did a great job. This movie does introduce G.U.N and the way they bring them in is funny and wrong all at the same time. I think fans of the games and the series will have fun with this also if you watched the Sonic X anime they lift whole entire scenes from the anime but they do it in a nice way.

The only thing I really had a problem with was the runtime. This movie clocks in at two hours and it really doesn't need to be. Nothing drags on in the film but there are a couple of scenes that I think could have been cut. I think the first movie's runtime is perfect and that's how they should keep these movies, nothing over an hour and forty-five minutes.

For Parents

The movie is rated PG. There really isn't anything that the little ones can't see. There is a really funny dance battle that comes out of nowhere that is hilarious. If they saw the first one there is nothing in here that they can't see. The movie does have a two-hour runtime and my theatre had a lot of trailers on it. Also, there is a post-credit scene that will be possibly setting up a third movie, there is only one though so you can leave after that one is done.

Overall

Just like the first movie, I am pleasantly surprised. I had a lot of fun with it, there are some nice easter eggs and a really cool Sonic Heroes scene for gamers. That post-credit scene is going to make some people extremely happy and let's be honest Jim Carrey is a national treasure. This is a perfect MATINEE style movie. Have you seen Sonic the Hedgehog 2? Leave a comment and let me know what you thought about the film. As always thanks for reading and supporting the blog. I really appreciate it.

Fresh Take - Halo Ep 3 Emergence (Spoiler-Free Thoughts)

 Available on Paramount +

Thoughts

Have you ever seen an episode of a show and just thought to yourself, 'is it just me or do writers really hate kids?' This episode starts off showing the backstory of Maake aka The Blessed One and how she came to have that book she's been reading in the first two episodes. This episode continues to show the background politics and manipulations going on with the UNSC. As the story is clearly setting up a who will find the Halo ring first style situation. Chief being back with the UNSC is interesting in and of itself as it is clear he knows something is up he just doesn't know what. We finally get to meet Cortana and personally I think she will be a breath of fresh air for the series. So glad they have the voice actress from the game voicing her and the fact that she can come and go at will, will be interesting moving forward. The issue with Madrigal is another plot point that will be getting some attention. I don't really know how I feel about that at this point as I feel the stuff on Madrigal is going to be kind of like a filler story. Personally, I think Madrigal served its purpose but apparently, the writers do not. I am liking that we are getting to know more about Master Chief, they are trying to humanize him which can work if done in an interesting way. I just hope they don't have him dropping 80's action movie one-liners, as they do something with his character in the episode that can open up the door to ridiculousness if not handled carefully. The effects in this episode seem to be getting better and I for one am happy about that. I am wondering though if we will ever see the grunts or brutes at some point. As of now, they have only shown the Elites and I am guessing we won't be getting the Arbiter in this series which to me would be a real shame. Dr. Halsey continues to be a character that I can't figure out. It's clear she's up to something but I can't for the life me figure out if she's going full Tywin Lannister or not. I guess only time will tell on that particular plot point. I am liking the flashbacks that they are showing as it is very clear that the UNSC has covered up a lot of situations and is living up to why people don't trust them. I still think that Reach is going to get glassed by the end of the season I'm just wondering how this will all play out.

Overall

I enjoyed the episode. They are doing enough to keep me interested and while I was initially worried about Cortana I was actually liking her in the episode. The cliffhanger and the growing sense of it being a race between The Demon (Master Chief) and The Blessed One (Maake) to find the Halo is very intriguing. What did you think of this week's episode? Leave a comment and let me know. Fresh Take - Moon Knight Thoughts on the First Two Episodes (Spoiler-Free)

 Available on Disney+

My Thoughts

The latest entry in the MCU is here and it's with a character that a lot of people may not know. One of the things that I enjoy about the MCU is their ability to take a genre of film or TV and adapt the character and elements from the comic into it in a way that makes it work. Even for characters that people may not be that familiar with as is the case with Moon Knight. This particular show revolves around a mercenary with dissociative identity disorder named Marc Specter who is in service to the Egyptian God of the Moon, Khonshu. In the comics Marc has nine different identities, I genuinely doubt we'll see all of them and the first two episodes focus on the Marc and Steven identities. There is a lot to like in these first episodes one of my favorite things is the psychological thriller aspect of the show. They do some fascinating horror-style elements in the show. From the use of lights and shadow to their use of mirrors. There aren't any real jump scares but they do enough with the music and the visuals that you actually worry about the characters a little bit. Once again Marvel does a great job on the casting. Oscar Isaac and Ethan Hawke are great on-screen with Ethan playing a cult leader-esque type villain and Isaac flipping between a genuine aloof, awkward, neurotic, and nice guy to badass merc. Their scenes together are great in these first two episodes, I am really looking forward to the rest of the season. There are some comedic moments but they don't drag on and they make sense narrative-wise. To be honest, there wasn't one thing I didn't like in these first two episodes. Disney and Marvel Studios have done a great job on their series so far and I don't see that stopping with this one.

For Parents

Like most of the Disney + MCU shows the episode length is between 45 - 55 minutes. While this show does have lite horror elements, it's not scary and I think if your little ones have seen the other shows they can watch this one. The pacing is fine I never felt the time and they do a good job of setting up the next episode.

Final Thoughts

I really think that fans of the Midnight Sons will be happy with this show as I can see how they will transition into that story. I also like how they are dealing with the supernatural while also being respectful of the genre that which the story is taking place. I have thoroughly enjoyed these first two episodes. Leave a comment and let me know what you think about the series.

Fresh Take - Halo First Two Episodes My Thoughts

 Available on Paramount +

My Thoughts

Okay, let's go ahead and get this out of the way. Yes, he takes his helmet off. Now that that's over with I will say that I don't hate the series so far. I do have my issues with it but for the most part, it is still interesting enough for me to want to see the whole thing through to the end. To be completely fair there is a visual difference between the first and second episodes. The first episode does look and feel like a pilot and the second episode is more polished. That being said I do like the CG on the Covenant. This isn't Industrial Light & Magic but the team does a good job with their takes on the Elites and the Prophets. In the first two episodes, the Prophet of Mercy seems to have a bigger role than the others. If you have been following along one of the big issues that dropped, besides Master Chief removing his helmet, was the fact that this story would not be using any of the expanded universe or lore from the games. I find this interesting as if you watch the first two episodes and are familiar with the games and the expanded universe you can tell that they are cherry-picking what they are using. At times it makes the story feel unbalanced, in my opinion. I would have much rather them either tell a new story like they said they were or adapt the games just pick one this would help to make the story tighter. One area the show is not lacking in is the action. They do a great job with the choreography as well as showing what a Covenant sweep looks like, violent and bloody with no remorse. When the Spartans show up they also do a good job of showing why the Covenant fear them as they are pretty much the only beings who stand a fighting chance against them. The cast isn't bad in my opinion, I think some of the plot points are just cliche and very predictable. There is clear manipulation going on within the UNSC and that is setting up some of the drama of the show. Whether this works or not, in the long run, remains to be seen. Like all shows in this genre, there are characters that ya love and some that ya hate. The jury is still out on Halsey for me the actress they have playing her is doing a great job but it still remains to be seen what her real motives are. Also, as of the time of this post, Cortana isn't in the show yet but they have brought her up a number of times. It should be interesting when she finally shows up. The show has brought up a couple of interesting things that have me curious as to how they plan on spinning this into the narrative and that is John not being the only 'Reclaimer'. Also, they are trying to humanize the Master Chief I just don't feel like it's working at the moment. The flashback sequences are a great touch though as it helps to flesh out more of his character.

I haven't talked about the character Makee, the human that is with the Covenant from the trailer, because in all honesty, they haven't really done much with her in these first two episodes. She is like the Master Chief so that is an interesting little twist that they have thrown in there. We also haven't seen the Grunts or the Brutes though I do suspect that at some point they will show up. I have a feeling that the season will end with the destruction of Reach, which is a major point in the games and lore, and seeing as how the planet is still intact it would make sense to destroy it at some point.

For Parents

This show is rated TV-14. There are action sequences and there is a little bit of gore but it's not over the top. The first two episodes' run times are 58 and 57 minutes respectively. So you will have to devote some time to it and you would probably want to pay attention so that you don't miss anything.

Overall

It's not bad but its not great either. There is enough to keep me interested in seeing where they go with this but there are some balancing issues with this story and a lot of moving parts that may cause issues later on. However, I am going to be a little hopeful that they can pull this off. So have you seen Halo on Paramount +? Leave a comment and let me know what you think. Fresh Take - The Adam Project

 Available on NetFlix

My Thoughts

It's been a while I know but I thought I would give blogging another try and this time stick with it. So The Adam Project is out on Netflix and stars Ryan Reynolds as a time traveler who goes back in time to not save the world and prevent a terrible future (which is what I thought at first) but to actually save his wife. This movie pretty much has everything that people love about Ryan Reynolds but it doesn't go too far and never goes overboard. The standout to me in the movie is Walker Scobell who plays the young version of Ryan's Adam character. If they ever want to bring Kid Deadpool to the screen MCU I think you have him. Walker does a great job of matching Ryan's quips with equal timing it's really amazing to see. There is a lot to like about this movie in my opinion. First of all, I think the story is told well and the pacing is tight. The CG is not bad and in my opinion not overly done to the point where it drags the scenes down. The action is shot well and scenes don't drag on forever. There is something that I found interesting is that there are a limited number of henchmen. Usually in movies like this the villain seems to have a neverending supply of henchmen but not here and I appreciate the writers for doing that. Also, the cast is great here. Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo are great together as Adam's parents. Zoe Saldana is also good for the limited time that she is in the movie. The movie is kind of a love letter to 80s films of this type.

Here's the thing that I feel was not really good was Catherine Keener's villain. Keener herself isn't bad but I just didn't like the way it was written, it just wasn't interesting to me. Also, some of the characters do feel like glorified cameos which isn't bad but was annoying to me.

For Parents

This movie is fine for the kids there isn't anything in it that is egregious or too over the top. If the little ones watch any superhero movies this is pretty much like that. The movie isn't long either clocking in at an hour and forty-five minutes. It's paced exceptionally well and I thought that actually helped as it made the movie feel tight and getting straight to the point and not dragging along.

Final Thoughts

You should probably watch this movie. In my opinion, it is very good and perfect for a Friday or Saturday night. Check it out and let me know what you think. Thanks for reading and I appreciate all the support.
